Jonathan Woodgate close to joining Middlesbrough on free transfer

• Woodgate played for Boro between 2007 and 2008
• Former England defender is currently without a club

Jonathan Woodgate is poised for a return to Middlesbrough subject to a medical.

The 32-year-old former England international is a free agent having played for Stoke City last season.

The Championship club have revealed on their website that Woodgate is close to starting a second spell at the Riverside Stadium, where he played as a trainee and then 52 times after an initial loan move from Real Madrid in 2007.

Boro eventually paid the Spanish giants £7m for Woodgate on that occasion before an £8m move to Tottenham Hotspur in January 2008.
