Spain’s Iniesta named player of the tournament by Uefa

• Midfielder tops Uefa’s list for team of the tournament
• Premier League’s Gerrard, Ballotelli and Silva included

Spain’s Andrés Iniesta was named as player of Euro 2012 when Uefa released its list of 23 players named as the squad of the tournament. It includes three Premier League players – Steven Gerrard, Mario Ballotelli and David Silva.

Uefa said: “Andrés Iniesta has been nominated as the Euro 2012 Best Player of the Tournament by the 11-man technical team of Uefa who have been following all the matches.”

Iniesta, the 28-year-old Barcelona midfielder, was a key member of the victorious Spanish side at the 2010 World Cup, scoring the winning goal in the final against Holland and also being named man of the match.

Spain have 10 players named in the Uefa Best Team of the Tournament.

Uefa’s 23-man squad of the tournament:

Goalkeepers Buffon (Italy), Casillas (Spain), Neuer (Germany).

Defenders Piqué (Spain), Coentrão (Portugal), Lahm (Germany), Pepe (Portugal), Ramos (Spain), Jordi Alba (Spain).

Midfielders De Rossi (Italy), Gerrard (England), Xavi (Spain), Iniesta (Spain), Khedira (Germany), Busquets (Spain), Ozil (German y), Pirlo (Italy), Xabi Alonso (Spain).
